Abstract
Problems faced by Southern Water Services Ltd. in consequence of a second dry summer in 1990 are reviewed. Around 73% of the region's water supplies come from underground sources, mostly from chalk aquifers. Over-abstraction from these has resulted in the drying up of chalkland streams. Low rainfall has compounded the problems in the region. Plans to build reservoirs to ease the situation in the longer term face environmental objections. (D.W.T.)
