Abstract
News coverage on homophobia has been increasing over the last few years as a result of the greater LGBT movement claim for visibility regarding the violations they suffer. However, the production of discourse on homophobia in the media has different meanings and disagreements that are affected by the society’s understanding of sexualities and genders that are dissident from the norm. Additionally, the internet is a modern way of informing the news, causing a synergy between journalism and digital media. This work aims at understanding how homophobia is represented in digital journalism based on digital news from the newspapers O Globo and Meia Hora, and obtained using the Google Alert tool about homophobic violence in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The timeframe used to select the news were the years 2015 and 2016.
