New carotenoids: Recent progress

Abstract

Progress on the identification of new carotenoids over the six years 1993-1999 is reviewed. Carotenoid structures with the normal C40 skeleton, carotenoid derivatives such as sulfates and glycoside esters, and apocarotenoids from higher plants, marine organisms, bacteria and algae, and metabolites in fishes and human serum are covered. Whenever possible, comments are made about biosynthetic and biological implications. © 1999 IUPAC.
