Abstract

The main purpose of the article is to describe socio-emotional characteristics of the gifted. It is noted that, in spite of its importance, this dimension has received less attention than the cognitive abilities and educational needs of gifted children in the literature of the field. Among other aspects, the asynchronous development, perfectionism, high levels of sensibility, underachievement are discussed, describing factors related to these aspects, as well as studies focusing several socio-emotional characteristics of the gifted. The article finalizes highlighting the need of counseling to the gifted and their families and educational system that recognizes and attends the gifted needs in several spheres - intellectual, social and emotional.
