Abstract

This article presents a fragment of research on the political economy of incarceration in the state of Santa Catarina, in its multiple manifestations within the context of neoliberalism in which the structure of social control presents itself as a primarily economic project. In this specific work, the increase in incarceration is analyzed, placing this growth within an incarceration company, and how the last decades are illustrative of the economic and material significance of this process. Thus, methodologically, it presents itself as an effort to systematize the prison reality in the recent period, based on official data, both from the Secretariat of Prison Administration and Public Security of Santa Catarina, and consolidated nationally by Infopen and the Brazilian Public Security Forum, in structure qualitative and quantitative analysis. This work aims to contribute to this organization of data about prisons in Brazil in the current period, which marks the turn of the century. XXI as the Era of Superincarceration. It is based on the hypothesis that the Santa Catarina prison project is at the forefront of the conservative neoliberal economistic model, which has the prison at the center of its modus operandi, and which has multiple functions, from being a privileged tool for controlling classes and populations marginalized, as well as an economic project, which can be highly profitable if managed based on the cost-benefit logic, in a true process of prison exploitation in the modern neoliberal capitalist economy.
