Abstract
The ability of mathematical representation is one of the abilities that elementary school students must possess. Representation is the main focus in constructing students' understanding. With the ability of representation can help students in solving mathematical problems. Besides that the problems that were previously complicated will become more concrete so that students will be easier to complete. The purpose of this study is to determine the ability of students' mathematical representation in solving mathematical problems related to the material volume of cubes and beams of Sumedang Regency. The research method used is the Qualitative method. The research subjects were elementary school students at Manangga Elementary School in Sumedang Regency with 23 students. Based on the results of data analysis of 23 students, overall the ability of mathematical representation in Manangga Elementary School reached 47% in the very low category. If viewed per aspect of representation ability, for verbal representation abilities reaching 61% in the low category, symbol representation ability reaches 29% in the very low category, and for visual representation abilities reaching 50% are in the very low category. From the analysis of student answers, the low representation ability of students is caused by students experiencing some difficulties. Student difficulties in verbal representation indicators due to lack of understanding in understanding problems, especially in this study are cube and beam volume material, students who are confused in writing completion steps in the form of words. Students' difficulties in symbol representation indicators, students experience students experiencing errors in writing mathematical models Writing completion steps using mathematical equations from the formula is not systematic volume beam, and there are students who incorrectly write symbols symbols of volume, length, width and height. While the difficulties of students in the indicator of visual representation, students still have difficulty in changing the verbal information from the question into the form of illustration images, seen from students who are not precise in determining the size that has been determined by the problem, causing errors in determining the volume of the beam.
