The article is relevant by observing what adaptive arrangements occurred in Brazil when using European concepts in the construction of Brazilian cooperativism. It also demonstrates the existence of a very specific relationship with the State, different from other countries, oscillating periods of indifference of the State in relation to the cooperative, alternating with periods of combat and others of promotion of cooperativism. The objective is to allow the understanding of the current situation of cooperativism in Brazil, divided between large economic companies that deviate from the original principles of cooperativism and; a popular cooperativism, destined to survive economic adversities. The text is descriptive, presents a Brazilian historical moment, it does not seek to answer a specific research question.
