CHILD AND ADOLESCENT ASSESSMENT

Abstract

This chapter identifies the clinical use and issues involved in the assessment of children and adolescents. It describes commonly used clinical instruments for assessing the following diagnostic conditions: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression and mood disorders, autism spectrum disorders, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and learning disorders. These include: The ADHD Rating Scale-5, NICHQ Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Parent Rating Scale, NICHQ Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Teacher Rating Scale, SNAP-IV-R, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale Modified for Children, General Behavior Inventory and the General Behavior Inventory-Parent Version, Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders Schizophrenia in School-Age Children, Mood and Feeling Questionnaire Child and Parent Versions, Young Mania Rating Scale and Parent Version of the Young Mania Rating Scale, Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale, Autism Spectrum Quotient, Child and Adolescent Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-Revised with Follow-up, Social Responsiveness Scale-Revised, School Aged Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale, Children’s Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale and Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Rating Scale-Second Edition, Early Learning Observation and Rating Scale, and the Wide Range Achievement Test 4. A strategy for selecting and implementing the assessment is provided. Case material illustrates the use of these assessments.
