Abstract

This article proposes a critical analysis of the Colombian liberal ideology of the 19th century from de discourse analysis of the writings of Florentino Gonzalez. This paper shows how the liberal ideology in Colombia has allowed authoritarian practices and how the foundations of the liberal party in Colombia were marked by those kinds of ideals. The arguments in favor of federalism and representative democracy, the configuration of Colombia as a successful country by copying the political structures of United States and United Kingdom, the use of political majority as legitimation of political decisions, and the necessity of army suppression, shows how the liberal ideas were built based on authoritarian premises.
