Abstract

When I first started as an engineer, I worked in the communications engineering department in a large company. The were about 50 engineers in the department plus a dozen technicians. All were male except for one engineer. I found the work environment positive, developed friends, and found good mentorship. My social group was all the inexperienced engineers hired in the previous two years. The female engineer was much more experienced than the group of us. Her social group was the secretaries. I didn't notice her mentoring any of the newer engineers. I suspect that from her perspective, the climate at work was considerably frostier.
