Abstract
The object-oriented programming paradigm (OOPP) is discussed and how it can be applied to FORTRAN software development is shown. The resulting programs are easier to debug, modify, and reuse, thereby reducing software development time. It is argued that application of OOPP is especially important for major projects that will see extended use or be used by more than one person. The new, proposed ANSI standard (‘‘FORTRAN-90’’) contains many features that implement OOPP ideas, but many of these ideas can also be incorporated into FORTRAN-77 projects. An example program is presented.
