GILBERTO FREYRE: A CIDADE COMO PERSONAGEM

Abstract

Resumo: A partir da leitura do romance Dona Sinhá e o filho padre, escrito em 1964, o artigo pretende mostrar a centralidade do tema "cidade" na obra de Gilberto Freyre. Partindo de sua correspondência dos primeiros anos nos Estados Unidos e seus artigos no jornal Diário de Pernambuco, examina o modo pelo qual o sentido atribuído à cidade na formação nacional se transforma no decorrer de sua obra. A relação entre o tradicional e o moderno é a chave que conduz sua interpretação da sociedade brasileira.Abstract: Based upon a reading of the novel Mother and son, a Brazilian tale, written in 1964, this article shows the centrality of the "city" in the work of Gilberto Freyre. Grounded in his correspondence from the first years in the United States, as well as articles published in the Diário de Pernambuco, it examines how the meaning attributed to the city changes throughout his work. The relationship between the modern and the traditional is key to Freyre's interpretation of Brazilian society.
