STEM Education in the Age of “Fake News”: A John Stuart Mill Perspective

Abstract

The author provides insights on fake news, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and the liberal education ideas offered by philosopher John Stuart Mill. Topics discussed include the rational and critical thinking skills that students need to learn in order to distinguish credible from fake news, the 2016 Stanford University study which revealed the failure of participating students to recognize fake news, and the purpose of science education according to Mill.
