Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between religiosity and mental health in adults with regard to demographic variables such as gender, marital status, educational level, socioeconomic status, and age. The samples of this empiric research are 300 adults, between the ages of 21-60, living in İstanbul. 163 of it (%54,3) are women and 137 of it (%45,7) are men. Questionnaire is formed of five parts: These are the questions which are intended to determine demografic status of subjects, Religiosity Scale (Uysal,1995), Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger et al., 1970), Self Esteem Scale (Eysenck,Wilson, 1998) and Beck Hopelessness Scale (Beck et al. 1974). For the results of the study, participants’ marital status, age and educational background properties causes meaningful changes, but there is no differences about socio-economic status, religiosity levels. Other result of this research is no meaningful relation found between religiosity levels with hopelessness and anxiety; but there is negative relation between religiosity and self esteem.
