Abstract

A large kinetic barrier prevents spontaneous disassembly of SNARE complexes, complicating thermodynamic measurements and resulting in hysteresis. Nonetheless, this kinetic barrier is probably crucial for SNARE function. © 2002 Nature Publishing Group.
