This paper presents the perspectives from analyses already undertaken and in process, within a study of archaeological instrument assemblages found at sites in Santiago del Estero Province, in Northern Argentina, dated to the late pre-Hispanic period and/or early colonial era (15th-16th centuries). The analysis involves two interconnected levels: (a) technical-functional, in relation to their role in the production process, associated technologies and attributes of the raw material processed; and (b) aesthetic, which focuses on the performance or agency of certain visual/textural attributes as diacritics and/or identity markers, and as indicators of learning processes and different skill levels.
