Abstract

This chapter considers the interactions of plantations with society, and the ways in which the perceptions, needs and rights of local people may best be taken into account to achieve sustainable development. Current plantation approaches are reviewed with respect to mechanisms for participation, and recommendations are made for dialogue between local people and plantation developers at all stages. The ways in which local people may be represented and the means of information exchange are considered. The chapter concludes with recommendations for achieving appropriate balances of control such that commercial, social, cultural and associated environmental objectives are realized. -Authors
