INTERVENTION IN UFRGS: THE ACTIONS OF THE UNIONS IN THE FACE OF UNDEMOCRATIC ATTACK (2020-2021)

Abstract

This documentary research analyzed the performance of UFRGS employee unions in the context of the anti-democratic threats that occurred between 2020-2021. Among the unions studied – ADUFRGS, ASSUFRGS, and Union Section of Andes-SN at UFRGS –, the results indicate different positions regarding the exercise of democracy and university autonomy. It is notelike an economic and a privatization character in the intervention of UFRGS, marked by the attempt to implement the university project defended by the Federal Government at the time. The intervention took place with the help of actors outside the university, like extreme right politicians. Thinking about the future of universities, we highlight the importance of the actions of the unions, pressuring and supporting the Council in containing the anti-democratic measures.
