Abstract

The 2005 Dietary Guidelines and the MyPyramid website can be used as tools for nutrition education. They fulfill their intention: to improve health and "improve the quality of an average American diet."3 It is important for individuals with diabetes and the entire health care team to remember that the intended audience for these materials is the general public and that they are not written specifically to be used as part of the diabetes education process. However, the tools provided on the MyPyramid website can be effective when used appropriately in the diabetes self-management education process.
