Management of meningitis

Abstract

Bacterial meningitis continues to have a 25% mortality in adults. Vaccines against meningitis C and Haemophilus influenzae type B have significantly reduced disease from these pathogens. New evidence suggests benefit in the use of steroids in pneumococcal meningitis. Laboratory techniques such as polymerase chain reaction have increased accurate detection of pathogens.
