Translators’ trust and distrust in the times of GenAI

Abstract

This article explores how professional translators perceive generative AI, particularly in relation to trust and mistrust, in systems such as ChatGPT. Using a mixed-methods approach, it begins with an analysis of online discussions among translators and follows with a survey of 252 professionals. The study offers a structured account of the factors influencing trust, placing translators’ concerns within established models of technology acceptance and AI trust. Findings indicate that trust in generative AI for core translation tasks is generally low. Adoption remains limited, with prominent concerns about data privacy and the impact on job security. Nonetheless, some translators report using tools like ChatGPT selectively, especially for summarising content or generating inspiration.
