Abstract
The natural history, the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of acute cholecystitis are discussed. The authors give special importance to the atypical manifestations found in elderly patients and in cases of acute acalculous cholecystitis as well as to the images obtained. The timing of surgery, the role of cholecystectomy by laparotomy or laparoscopy, and the use of cholecystotomy are reviewed.
