Abstract
Empirical studies consistently show that women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression and that low-income women are more vulnerable to depression than high-income women. The goal was to investigate the subjective experiences of depression of low-income South African women. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine women from a semi-rural low-income community in the Western Cape who were diagnosed with depression. Results showed that participants described various atypical symptoms and manifestations of depression not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR).
