Abstract

Summary polysaccharide (SP) from water extn. of Furcellaria lumbricalis was characterized by phys. methods (13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, neutron activation anal.). The polysaccharic and inorg. parts of SP were analyzed. The compn. of SP appears to be much more complicated than described earlier. Furcellaran cannot be divided into fractions (except the κ-carrageenan fraction) on the basis of soly. in KCl soln.; no iota-carrageenan fragments are present in this polysaccharide.
