Abstract
For the purpose of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa (UNCCD), desertification was defined as “land degradation in arid, semiarid and dry sub-humid areas caused by the complex interactions among the biological, political, social, cultural and economic factors, including climatic variations and human activities”. Today, real deserts and desertification-prone areas existing over hyper-arid, dry, semi-arid, dry sub-humid areas overspread about 47 per cent of the Earth’s land. Desertification-prone semi-arid and dry subhumid areas in Turkey, on the other hand, cover about 35 per cent of the country. This rate reaches about 60 per cent with joining of the semi-humid climate conditions.
