An instrument developed for the rapid and accurate measurement of skin thickness is described. The equipment is accurate to 0.1 mm. Techniques adapted for the determination of the fat and protein contents of the skin of sheep are also described. Samples were taken from the pelts of three sheep of different live weights to determine the distribution of gradients in skin thickness over the body. A uniform sampling area has been defined. This is near the middle of the back, adjacent to the vertebral column. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
