Abstract
Many researches show that the education in Indonesia is still in the red zone. Many obstacles of education is complexity to overcome. The low level of literacy and the low rank ofeducation are indicators of the low quality of education in Indonesia. Essentialism is one of the education theories which offers the various perspectives to regenerate the truly essential education. By promoting the basic subjects such as reading, writing, and mathematics are intended to be fundamental for the students toward their future. This theory put emphasis on the importance of education which had already been qualified that is culture of the past. This theory also criticizes the developed curriculum based on flexibility. Developing curriculum based on the flexibility leads to be unsatble and inapproriate principles. The enforcement of the national literacy policy, the strengthening of basic subjects, and the enforcement of cultural education are parts of the implementation of the essentialism theory which are provided in this article.
