Abstract

By 2030 it is estimated that the 6G communication system will be in service in most countries. The 6G communication system would be able to provide applications that are not presently available in the 4G and 5G technology. The present generation technologies lack the security and intelligent connection between the objects. To overcome these shortfalls, 6G provides the solution by introducing technologies like quantum communication, artificial intelligence, blockchain, visible light communication, the Internet of everything, and so forth. For these technologies, photonics is one of the most suitable and reliable platforms. This chapter discusses the key enabling technologies of 6G communication systems and the importance of photonics in realizing these 6G technologies. This chapter also presents recent development of photonics for 6G communication.
