Water security in the la Yarada coastal aquifer: current and future challenges

Abstract

RESUMEN El acuífero costero La Yarada, se encuentra emplazado en la cabecera del Desierto de Atacama al norte de Chile siendo uno de los lugares más secos de la Tierra, en este trabajo se busca establecer los desafíos actuales y futuros, para lograr su seguridad hídrica. Se realizó la revisión documentaria de los proyectos hidráulicos ejecutados y futuros ligados al sistema acuífero y su legislación en materia de aguas. Podemos confirmar que la seguridad hídrica en este acuífero, no ha sido alcanzada, el balance hídrico anual cada vez es más negativo y la calidad del agua se viene deteriorando en forma progresiva. Se debe establecer la incorporación de agua al acuífero proveniente de trasvase de agua de cuencas vecinas (Maure, Uchusuma, Sama y Locumba), inducción de infiltración de agua en la zona húmeda, tratamiento de aguas servidas, desalinización de agua de mar o agua de la interfase agua dulce-agua salada. ABSTRACT The coastal aquifer La Yarada, is located at the head of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile and is one of the driest places on Earth, in this work seeks to establish the current and future challenges to achieve water security.
