Sustainable development

Abstract

Since the foundation of the OECD in 1961, sustainability has become a growing challenge for societies that has also affected international organizations. This chapter shows how the OECD has both reacted to and shaped global debates on sustainable development through its work programme, strategy, and structure. The document analysis reveals that OECD concepts were aligned to the global framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, which has become a core element in all the policies orchestrated by the OECD. Strategic orientations also changed as to consider the needs of future generations and promote sustainability transformations in OECD member states. They mark incremental, yet important changes towards sustainable development, that are also reflected in new institutional structures. Most importantly, multidisciplinary initiatives were implemented and partnerships with the UN fostered.
