Abstract
Summary: After giving a survey of basic optical remote-sensing possibilities for obtaining information on snow and ice, this article describes a special method developed for monitoring snow cover with a high level of both spatial and temporal resolution. The method is based on the assumption that thawing proceeds to a spatial pattern specific to the particular area, and constant for major periods. This spatial pattern is studied on the basis of a series of high-resolution images of type Landsat TM, which can date from different years. The time curve of the thawing process is determined from MODIS images. This permits recording the development of snow cover patterns with a level of resolution sufficiently high even for small catchments. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.
