Abstract
The article reports on the efforts to resolve the vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Horn of Africa in 2017 and 2018. Topics include the effectiveness of live, attenuated (Sabin) oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) in the elimination of poliomyelitis worldwide and the role of extensive person-to-person transmission of Sabin poliovirus in the development of neurovirulence and paralytic VDPV disease.
