Mutation in BRCA1 accounts for half of all familial breast cancer cases. Recent studies have shown its role in the epigenetic regulation of an oncogenic microRNA, revealing a novel mode of tumor suppression that is independent of its well-established role in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. © 2013 Landes Bioscience.
