Abstract
The rise of worldwide communication networks and information technologies have redefined the concept of education in all fields. In engineering, a new educational paradigm can be glimpsed where the development of generic skills is prioritized in the curriculum and professional training of university students and practitioners. Skills such as the ability to successfully communicate orally and in writing, to operate with a multidisciplinary perspective in decision-making and problem-solving, to work in teams, and to become involved in lifelong learning, among others. The relationship among communication, training and lifelong learning is a key point in the profile of the engineer in this century. The challenge for those who are committed to the new paradigm, both teachers and trainers in the private sector, is to be able to incorporate the three dimensions into the educational process, so that it contributes to a better preparation of the individual to perform in the workplace from a human and professional point of view.
