Abstract

Compact heat exchangers with high heat-transfer coefficients and large surface areas were discussed. The thermal benefits, concepts of thermal effectiveness, temperature approach and the degree of compactness of compact heat exchangers were analyzed. The flow passages of heat exchangers were suggested to be more uniform across the flow thereby minimizing the stagnant low-velocity zones within the exchanger. Various types of exchangers containing cross-corrugated channels, spiral plates and proprietary welding were also discussed in correlation to fins and plates provided for heat exchange.
