Abstract
Elementary school students are currently still having difficulty in answering science concept questions. For instance, the science concept that is directed at the macroscopic and microscopic level of an object. This is caused the teacher who does not direct and provide good guidance to students. Therefore, to form a good concept for students, the internal representation of students must be enhanced by questions of challenging basic science concepts that occur in everyday life. The purpose of this study was to analyze the internal representation of students at the Surface, Matching and Deep (SMD) level. The method used in this study was a survey by providing diagnostic test questions. The research sample was fifth grade students in various elementary schools in Ambon City with a total of 100 students. The results showed that student analysis was only able to answer science concept questions at level M and not able to level D. Thus, it is expected that teachers can pay special attention to train and explore test questions at a higher level in learning so that students can succeed in increasing its internal representations.
