Abstract
(from the cover) Schizophrenia is a much-mythologized, much-maligned disease that has been stigmatized in the media and sensationalized in film. This volume, while never underestimating the incalculable damage schizophrenia can inflict, nevertheless maintains hope in the future of neuroscientific research and the progress that is being made in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The chapters provides a multicultural and patient-centered perspective on schizophrenia's core symptoms, its psychosocial effects, and its psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic management. The manual offers chapter outlines, tables and case studies, and references designed to provide an education in the diagnosis and management of this disease. The volume is grounded in biological science and is intended for clinicians as well as beginning medical students. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved).
