Introducing English for Specific Purposes Book Review (Laurence Anthony, 2018)

Abstract

This paper examines Anthony’s “Introducing English for Specific Purposes” book published in 2018 as a foundational work justifying and describing the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) pedagogy on the subject of foreign language instruction. The book is divided into three sections: contextualising ESP, examining its four main components, and applying ESP in teaching practice. This research goes on to emphasise the importance of needs analysis, objective-setting, materials development, and evaluation in the development of an appropriate curriculum for different professional fields. Furthermore, the text highlights the problems teachers face when trying to apply ESP methodology, and analyses the ways to bridge these gaps. Focusing on Anthony’s ESP with education and global communication, it shows the necessity of adaptability and agility in modern language teaching. This paper suggests that the book is crucial for both researchers and practitioners because it lays the groundwork for enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of language pedagogy in particular settings.
