Abstract

In a series of 1,232 native Africans in the Ulanga district of Tanzania an incidence of 18.2% Hb S and a frequency of 14.5% glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in males were found. No connexion between the two abnormalities was detectable. Comparison of an area with a high malaria incidence with an area with a lower incidence revealed a significant difference in Hb S inheritance and a probable difference in the frequency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. © 1965, British Medical Journal Publishing Group.
