Urban farming has helped guarantee the country's food security and create a less centralised and more independent economy in relation to the Cuban authorities thanks to the development of democratic, self-managed, economic units based on the principles of solidarity, concern for the well-being of the community, and the respect of nature. This new form of social economy differs from capitalist enterprises whose objective is the concentration of power and the accumulation of wealth and capital through the exploitation of labour and nature. It also differs from traditional state-owned enterprises in Cuba where there is little scope for individual initiative and creativity by workers.
