Abstract

The clear aim of the general inspection of the Viceroyalty of Peru headed by Antonio de Are-che and Jorge de Escobedo en 1777-1785 was to purify the administration of justice and finances by means of a policy of removing power from a supposedly corrupt creole elite and putting it in the hands of disinterested peninsular Spaniards. This article analyses the results of this policy by means of a biographical study of the key members of the bureaucracy - the viceroys, the inten-dants, and the regents of the audiencias of Lima and Cusco - during the period following the end of the inspection.
