Abstract

Learning math can help students become more adept at using their critical thinking to solve problems. Challenges that require high order thinking skills (HOTS) are one of the questions to practice critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of junior high school students that require HOTS level problem-solving. This study uses a method that is qualitative and descriptive. The subjects of this study were class IX students at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Jaten. The data collection technique used was to test the HOTS question instrument in the form of a written test consisting of 3 essay questions and an interview test. Based on the results of the analysis, the research findings show that students' critical thinking skills are still below 50%; the only markers they excelled at were focus and reasoning, which they achieved at 64% and 50%, respectively.
