Abstract
Reactions of methyl iodide in aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions were studied by determining the concentrations of all measurable chemical species participating in the reactions. It was found that methyl iodide reacts competitively with both water and hydroxide ion in dilute solutions. The reaction rate constants were determined at temperatures from 25 to 65°C. The activation energy of hydrolysis reaction was 27.6 kcal/g-mol and that of reaction of methyl iodide with hydroxide ion was 22.0 kcal/g-mol. © 1974, The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan.
