Abstract
The present work is focused on influence of drilling parameters namely drill bit helix angle, cutting speed and feed rate on the drill bit life. Eight drilling experiments have been planned as per Taguchi orthogonal array of L8 with two levels of each drilling parameter and is performed on Ti-6Al-4V with carbide drill bits. Surface roughness and amplitude of drill bit vibration velocity are taken as responses to evaluate the tool life and significance of process parameters. In this study, a non-contact sensor named Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) was used to measure the vibration of drill bit in terms of acousto optic emission signals. A high-speed Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyzer was used to transform the acousto optic emission signals in to useful signals like acceleration of drill vibration velocity. In the analysis of surface roughness and amplitude of drill bit vibration, helix angle is found to be the significant parameter with a contribution of 46.35% and 75.58% respectively.
