Abstract

The set in study: the altarpiece of the Cathedral of Lamego (1506-1511), a work of undeniable historical and artistic importance of the sixteenth-century painter Vasco Fernandes, "Grão Vasco" is fully documented by its legal contract, which lasted until the present. However, it is known that data often perceived empirically, or even present in notorial acts relating to the construction of the altarpiece, for several reasons, not always correspond fully to the entire reality. The work that follows, is intended to cross the technical and material knowledge of the supports of these paintings, with the data examined in the regiments of corporate mechanical crafts work of wood: carpenters, joiners, cabinet makers, carvers (and by comparison painters); to determine, through accreditation procedures of crafts apprentices, and other normatives what were the required techniques and materials in the historical context of the Portuguese Renaissance period.
