This article examines the theme of obedience to the civil authorities on the part of Christian thought of the first five centuries. It also considers the issue of the death penalty, which receives a varying appreciation among the patristic authors. It is stated that, in this respect, the extreme opinions do not use a biblical foundation, but a rational one.
