Abstract

Research was undertaken in a rural area to investigate the nature of poverty, its effects on these families and how they can be empowered to live healthy lives. A random sample of 230 people was selected. A survey was conducted and data was collected by means of a personal schedule. It was clear that poverty had a negative effect on the families and that very little was done to alleviate their plight. For the sake of these families' well-being, their strengths should be identfled and enhanced. The social worker is the person who can empower them.
