Abstract

The prestressed and non-prestressed composite designs for simply-supported longitudinal stringers for short span deck bridges are studied. A comparison shows that prestressing results in a reduction in the steel weight of 29. 6, 22. 3 and 28. 7% for 40-ft, 60-ft and 80-ft spans, respectively, whereas the corresponding reductions in the cost of steel are 21. 8, 13. 8 and 23. 8%.
