Abstract
English learning materials for vocational high school students should meet students’ needs for their future work place. Thus, it is necessary to reveal the students’ perception towards the English learning materials they use at school based on the social semiotic perspective in order to provide better materials for them. We carried out in-depth interviews to vocational high school students in one of the schools in Semarang. The results show that students need materials which 1) accommodate topics needed in their future workplace, 2) are relevant with the students’ language proficiency level, and 3) have relevant registers. Hopefully, this article can be an insight especially for vocational high school teachers and materials developers in developing materials for vocational high school students.
