Abstract

In this study, we prepared BG filler powder containing some ions such as copper or zinc via sol gel method and their loading onto chitosan polymeric matrix for improving their bioactivities as well as their effect onto microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were studied. The produced biocomposites characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformer infrared spectra (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses and Scanning electron microscope. Bioactivity behavior carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C and pH 7.4 for the biocomposites to verify the formation of apatite layer onto their surface. The results proved the presence of integration and homogeneity between BG and chitosan polymeric matrix. The results showed that BG/chitosan composite containing zinc ions had high ability effect onto Staphylococcus aureus compared to other composites. The in-vitro study confirmed the formation of apatite layer onto the surface of chitosan polymeric matrix and its composites with BG proving the vital role of chitosan to precipitate the ions of calcium and phosphate onto the composite surface. The conclusion show that BG/chitosan composite had ability to induce the bone-like apatite layer and anti-bacterial properties especially those containing zinc ions. Therefore, these biocomposites are promising to use as bone grafting, in tissue engineering as scaffolds and antibacterial applications.
